Detectives Pocket Book 1856-1898

The society has been given permission to transcribe most of a Detectives Pocket Book. The book contains names and descriptions of criminals who were active in various parts of the country in a period dating from 1856 to 1898 with almost 500 entries transcribed. Most entries in the book have a photograph of the offender but the quality varies and this is accompanied by a list of convictions and aliases. The transcription lists an age and a date of conviction, which was the first listed conviction, and an assumption was made that the age was the age give on that date from which an approximate birth date can be calculated. Aliases have been shown with and ‘a’ after the page number and the details are the same as proper name of the offender. Due to the sensitive nature of the information in the book only a small part has been transcribed and further information will only be supplied to proven relatives on receipt of copies of any certificates and any further information to prove your connection to the offender.
Enquiries should enclose a stamped self addressed C5 size envelope and be sent to Pocket Book Enquiry, C/O 15 Ralston Croft, Halfway, Sheffield, S20 4TU.
Please allow 28 days for your reply.
