Play Title:Casting the Angel
Runtime:61-90 minutes
Synopsis:
When you’ve passed middle age and life hasn’t turned out the way you expected, how far will you go to win what could be a last chance at success? Casting the Angel asks that question through the character of BRINDLE Daring, a 50+ actress who has returned to Vancouver, the scene of her first success and the place she thinks of as home, to audition for the role of Hagar Shipley in a film version of The Stone Angel. More than a rare opportunity to play a substantial role, success would restore her lately-sagging fortunes and earn her the recognition she craves. A reunion with old friends, LORETTA and IRIS, two of four women who met as young actors, reveals that KAY, once BRINDLE’S best friend and her equal if not better in talent, is being sought for the same part. B and K’s friendship cracked when K visited B at Stratford, over twenty years before. Regretful, lonely after the break up of a long term relationship with her agent, B has been wanting to make amends, until she finds out that K might be a threat. LORETTA, who chose to balance family and career, welcomes BRINDLE to her home for old time’s sake and because she feels B might help her move up from the insurance commercials that have been her professional mainstay. When it turns out that B’s not as influential as she hoped, L accelerates a search for the missing K, who could provide an alternative way to forge the connections L wants. The fourth friend, IRIS, who left the theatre for teaching, to support her novelist husband, and LORETTA’s husband KEN respark an affair that took place before any of them were married. The three women find K, but before she can audition, B makes sure that K gets drunk, a needless tactic, as K, high on wine and painkillers, reveals the tragedy that effectively put an end to her career. In the end, B gets the part, but at the cost of her humanity.
