Play Title:SHAMAN
Runtime:91-120 minutes
Synopsis:Kaythee, a woman seer in Burma, gets into trouble with the military junta because she makes a "political prediction." She tells a medical doctor in Mandalay (the second largest city), who is being harrassed by the local authorities and being asked to certify that a prisoner died of natural causes, when in actuality he died of a beating, to move to Rangoon, the capital city.

At about the same time, Kaythee correctly predicts that Carl Carpetbagger, an ugly American businessman, will win the Pick-6 lotto. When he does, he wants to bring Kaythee to the United States -- to "man" a Dial-an Astro line. She leaves with Carl because the danger of her being imprisoned is real.

In America, Carl either rapes or tries to rape her and she ends up in psychiatric counseling where she is diagnosed as having MPD or Multiple Personality Disorder. Her alters manifest themselves as some of the colorful "nats" or legendary spirits of Burma, who were all victims of the kings.

There is a romance or a near romance with the psychiatrist, who has to integrate her personalities. But she can't give them all up to Dr. Brad Doak. She keeps Lady Golden Words, died of a broken heart, and Golden Words' lover Strong.

My play is about identity and notions of sickness and mental health in different cultures. It is set against the backdrop of Burma's searing political situation.

Shaman has had a staged reading in DC and has been praised by playwright Edward Albee as "lovely work." The year it was written, it was a Pew Finalist Script.
