To the best of my knowledge Corinne's story has not yet been widely told. I wrote CORINNE GOODNIGHT during the summers of 1998, 1999, and 2000 after uncovering historical documents held at the archives of the Center for American History, Austin, Texas; Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, Austin, Texas; Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, Canyon, Texas; Armstrong County Museum, Claude, Texas; and Clarendon Museum, Clarendon, Texas.
The play presents the story of the marriage of Corinne, age 26, to Charles Goodnight at age 91. Running parallel to this story from the past of the marriage and the efforts of Charles Corinne to have a child, is the story of the playwright's (Alice's) struggle to get this play on the stage. Both women could be said to be ruthless and driven. Themes that play throughout are time, light, and nature in the expanse of West Texas. In discussion after a very successful staged reading on the 23rd of September, 2001, audience members described the piece as imagistic, naturalistic, impressionistic, transcendent, eternal, dynamic, mythical, timeless, and postmodern. The play made up of a cast of six characters in three acts—103 manuscript pages--takes place within the time frame of one day and runs for approximately120 minutes.
