Play Title:At Her Feet
Runtime:120+plus minutes
Synopsis:Sara Jacobs, the personable young storyteller, gives voice to five other Islamic women in this iridescent series of monologues: Azra al Jamal, the young Jordanian woman stoned to death; Auntie Kariema, Sahra’s aunt, a ‘Malay’ woman with a wicked sense of humour and the best pies in Cape Town; Ayesha, Sara’s friend, a feminist slam-poet with a political agenda; Tahira Hussein, Sara’s cousin, a Indian-Muslim woman who works for a travel agency; and finally, Azra’s mother.

The title of this award-winning play refers to the Prophet Mohammed’s statement about a mother: “Paradise is at her feet”. The relationship – personal and social – between women and Islam is a complex one, and At Her Feet explores this with sharp insight, gentle humour and sensitivity. In theatre reviews, At Her Feet has been described as ‘invigorating’, ‘moving’ and ‘rich’, with the Mail & Guardian saying that it “triumphantly gives tongue to a set of voices barely heard in public discourse”. It is an important play about women reaching across divides.
