Play Title:I am Marguerite
Runtime:61-90 minutes
Synopsis:The play is inspired by the true story of Margeurite de Roberval, a determined and adventurous young woman who, in 1542, left the court of the King of France to come to Canada with her brother, Jean-Francois Sieur de Roberval on the ill-fated first attempt of Cartier and de Roberval to establish a French colony at Stadacona. Marguerite fell in love with an unsuitable young man on board ship and her enraged brother abandoned her on a deserted island in the Strait of Belle Isle with her lover and nurse. The play takes place on a fall day in 1544 when a nearly mad Marguerite sees a boat anchor off the island. Is rescue possible? Does she want it? As she struggles to make a decision she is beset by phantoms of her lover, and her nurse who she led to their deaths, her brother who felt justified in taking hers, and her mentor, the elegant and powerful Queen of Navarre who counsels compromise.
