The struggle between the two begins as Alice tries to get Peter to cross the street with her and then to get him to come into the very staid art club where she is a member. She succeeds but finds that her need to laugh is then complicated by his needs and their parallel but often conflicting exploration of the boundaries between reality and abstraction, privilege and margin.
