Intro.
You walk into a shopping mall and suddenly see an old gentleman falling down. What is it? The patient is unconscious. You do not have time to think long. There could be many reasons. Yet cardiac arrest is one of the most fearsome reasons.
When heart ceases to pump blood to brain the person will die within minutes.
Other organs are shut down too. However you can delay serious organ damage, brain damage and death. Cardiac arrest may happen even in a seemingly healthy person.

Immediately call emergency medical team (or ask someone to call). Start CPR and defibrillation.

The reasons include: * Arrhythmias (distorted heart rhythms) * Heart attack (infarction) * Coronary artery disease * Brain Stroke * Choking or asthma attack * Bleeding from trauma * Electrical Shock * Drowning * Heart failure * Valvular disease of heart * Cocaine abuse * Genetic disorders of the heart (especially in young athletes) * Obesity, smoking and drug abuse are triggers for cardiac arrest.

The person loose consciousness and stops to answer. You feel no pulse. Breathing stops. Pressure drops. EKG shows absence of electrical activity or fibrillation. As a layperson you probably just see cold unresponsive guy or lady lying on the floor. The wise way is to treat immediately.

* Immediately CALL EMERGENCY. *Many public places have automated external defibrillator (AED). Use it. The instruction are simple and usually are written on the cover. Modern AEDs will even speak to you. They tell you loudly what to do. * Start CPR . And if do not have AED or the response is delayed, start CPR anyway. For a layperson the instruction are simple: 1) Just blow twice into the person mouth 2) Press on chest between nipples maybe 5 cm down. Continue to pump 30 times, blow twice again and repeat all over until the medical help arrives.

* Loose weight. * Exercise * Let your doctor to check for high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes. Follow recommendations * Stop smoking * Balance your diet with low fat, fruits and vegetables. * Eat fish * Learn CPR
