It hurts! It hurts!" The Corn Flakes are having an amazing time at the beach when all of a sudden Kitty collapses. After getting into the hospital, the doctor's diagnose her with Leukemia. Things just fall apart. Darbie is scared, Fiona is in extreme denial, Willoughby and Maggie are not sure how to respond, and Sophie, Sophie just wants desperately to be able to help somehow but doesn't know how - until Kitty sends her a list of what she needs: 1. I need more letters from the Corn Flakes 2. I need to see my Corn Flakes 3. I need school clothes 4. I want to talk to Dr. Amy again 5. I need some hair Sophie and the Flakes can handle the first 3, but talking to Fiona's mom violates the promise Sophie made Fiona about NOT letting her mom talk to Kitty. Fiona is afraid her mom will give Kitty worst case scenarios when Fiona is convinced Kitty will be the exception to all the rules. And hair? How can Sophie get Fiona hair that looks ok, that the Corn Pops and Fruit Loops won't just try to pull off? Is Sophie ready to give up whatever she has for Kitty? And can Jesus give her and the other girls the strength to handle Kitty's having Leukemia? | Extra Notes: | In Sophie's Stormy Summer, Sophie and the other Corn Flakes girls come face to face with an illness that could very well lead to death. Leukemia isn't something that goes away like the flu. The girls are scared, everyone from Kitty to Sophie is terrified. And they're growing up fast, especially Sophie who is listening to Jesus and trying to do whatever He tells her to do.
The Sophie series is about a 12 year old girl in 6th, then 7th grade who, along with her friends, the Corn Flakes, is trying to live the way Jesus wants in the midst of middle school drama. Between bullies, grades, parents, siblings, and boys life can be pretty difficult. The Corn Flakes are known for their big imaginations and create videos of the things Sophie dreams up. I highly recommend this series, not just for young girls, but for anyone who wants to be challenged spiritually or just enjoy a great story! | Reviewer: | J:-)mi | Recommendation Scale: | 5 |
