She's in a good relationship with a guy who is a strong believer. She's doing amazing at her gymnastics, getting 10's at meets. She has good friends, multiple ones. But enter into the scene alcohol, peer pressure, a brother who's drinking and gambling and expecting her to keep it a secret - even when he gets injured because of it, and an old boyfriend who wants her back (and that she still has feelings for). Even throw in a random racism issue and some friends who are majorly messing up. Life isn't so perfect after all. In fact it's a big huge mess! Laurel turns to her faith in God to find answers, but choices still have consequences. | Extra Notes: | Typical highschool novel. The boyfriend issues are back and forth and back and forth. She likes this one, but gets caught in the arms of that one. She gets forgiven, then does it again. She doesn't explain that she's trying to offer spiritual comfort to someone who might have HIV. She just gets mad and he gets mad, etc. And friendships? Laurel's friends all keep doing stupid stuff like drinking or sleeping around and Laurel has to decide to join them or try to save them from themselves and risk their anger at her. Things get intense when Laurel has a friend who gets diagnosed as HIV positive, some kids are almost killed in a drunken car race, a gymnast about dies from drugs, and a friend almost gets killed by an angry ex-boyfriend who shows up with a gun. The sibling rivalry is extremely intense as well. Laurel's brothers appear to hate one another. | Reviewer: | J:-)mi | Recommendation Scale: | 2 |
