8300HD would recognize the external drive following both Apricorn and Scientific Atlanta instructions but would not go to the format screen. Searched the various DVR forums and found out it is an OS (Passport Echo) issue. Instead of having your 8300HD off, it should be *on* before you connect the external drive. Then hold down SEL and EXIT until it 'dings'. Then release both buttons. Then press and release EXIT one more time. The 8300HD should recognize the external drive and prompt you to format.
