My DVR is the Scientific Atlanta 8240 HDC.

I copied shawc's specs except that I got a larger drive. Everything works fine. I can record two HD programs at the same time, even while watching back another HD program that I previously recorded to the external drive. No glitches appear on any of the shows.

As an aside, I bought the hard drive retail. The model number on the box is WD10000LSRTL, but the model number on the device itself is WD1001FALS. Apparently the WD10000LSRTL is just a retail model of WD1001FALS, but the devices themselves are identical.

Initially, I had a seemingly strange problem in that I could record most HD channels with no problems, but a couple of HD channels were badly corrupted, even when I simply tried to watch them. After a little bit of searching, I discovered that the problematic channels were broadcasting in 720p, but I had my DVR configured only to display in 1080i. I reconfigured my DVR to play only in 720p, and that appears to have cured the problem. I will report back if any glitches appear.
