I installed hard drive in enclosure (The case had an annoying bright blue LED that I disconnected). I unplugged power to 8300HD and plugged hard drive enclosure into power and turned on. After hard drive powered up I plugged it into eSATA connection on 8300HD using eSATA cable included with enclosure. Plugged 8300HD back in to outlet. After 8300HD booted a screen came up indicating an external harddrive was attached and asked if I wanted to format it. I chose A to format. After less than a minute formating was complete. Tested with no problems to report.

After first restart of 8300HD a screen indicated that the external hard drive should remained powere up for 10 seconds after 8300 HD is turned off. Total capacity appears to be around 135 hours of HD programming.

UPDATE: One year later (April 2011) and drive still works great. I have noticed some audio "stuttering" on rare occasion but I suspect it is from TWC KC and not the hard drive.
