I have used this drive with a 8300HDC for over 2 years without any problems whatsoever. Earlier this week I was "upgraded" from Passport to Navigator. Now I have a paperweight. The 8300HDC recognizes that an external drive is connected and prompts me to reboot. As an aside, if I choose not to reboot and then do anything that would access the drive (attempt to record, go to the recording list, etc) then the box forcefully reboots itself; I don't know if this is normal or not, but I'm pretty sure this didn't happen prior to the upgrade. Anyway, after reboot the size of the drive is reflected on the diagnostic screen but it still says only 1 device is present and the model is "Unavailable". With the drive hooked up I cannot record AT ALL; not even live buffering. Also, none of the recordings on the drive are listed. Any attempts to record result in a message in the recording log: "Not recorded because the channel was not available (2)". Without the drive hooked up recording works as normal, though obviously I am limited to the minuscule 160GB of the built in drive. As a last resort I might try a low-level format in the next couple of days; I'll update this entry with those results.

UPDATE: Well, I finally got around to this; only took a bit over a year. Anyway, I did a low-level format and still no better than before. Why is it that every upgrade of the cable box ends up making it worse than before?
