Jason Clemens Benefit

The story of this benefit began in the Sandhills of Nebraska at the annual Comstock Windmill Festival. On June 10th Jason Clemens was enjoying a wonderful two day trip full of country music and competing in the Extreme Bull Riding Tour. Everything was perfect. Then it happened. Several seconds into his second ride of the two day event his face and the bulls head came in direct contact. It was fast but it was hard. Jason was lying on the arena dirt, his face completely shattered. The Extreme Sports Medicine Team sped into action and a life flight helicopter from Omaha was on its way. The rest is a big blur for Jason. He was on his way to Omaha for emergency surgery. His family was on their way from Winterset, in fact, they beat the helicopter to Omaha. Nine hours of surgery, several plates and pins and Jason’s face was rebuilt. The good news, miraculously there was no brain damage. The bad news, Jason’s insurance did not cover anything past emergency treatment out of state. Medical bills and loss of income was going to be a big problem for Jason.

Jason graduated from high school in 2006 and had qualified for the Iowa High School Rodeo Finals and was looking forward to attending the National High School Rodeo Finals. That was a dream he had to leave in the arena dirt at Comstock.

Jason had not only been riding on the Extreme Bull Riding Tour but he had been helping on the production team as well. Shad Smith of the Double S Bull Company was the first on the bandwagon to help Jason. His hard work paid off and on September 16th the Jason Clemens Benefit was held at the Madison County Fairgrounds in Winterset, Iowa, Jason's hometown. The Madison County Fairboard graciously donated the facilities to the cause. Todd and Tammy Crase, Winterset, Iowa, owners of White Buffalo Productions and the members of the Extreme Bull Riding Tour production team donated their time to produce the bull riding section of the event. Stock for the event was provided by Shad and Vicki Smith, Double S Bull Company, Sidney, Iowa; Berry Wright, Rite N Gear, Osceola, Iowa; and Troy Pitzen, Chief Rodeo Company, Peru, Iowa. Not only did the production team donate their time but so did the other personnel including announcer, Blaine Partridge. North Loupe, NE; barrelman, Tadpole Dennis, Green Castle, MO; bullfighters, Brandon Lindsey, Green Castle, MO and Brandon Brazier, Bowling Green, MO; judges, Justin Bane, Winterset, Iowa and Thad Ida, Kearney, NE; and bull wrangler, Berry Wright, Osceola, Iowa. Alisa Eason of Clarinda, IA, was in charge of the sound system. Henry Yoder was the top rider of the night with a score of 165 on 2. He was the only man to ride his bull in the RodeoAttiutde.com short go. Henry donated $200 of his winning to Jason.

To add to the evening’s entertainment there was a jackpot barrel racing put together by Jason’s mother Teri Clemens. Teri is the District 4 Representative for the National Barrel Horse Association. Thirty-two contestants entered the 3D Event. Winners were: 1D, Shayla Diehl; 2D, Brenda Diehl; and 3D, Cindy Pitzen. A special thank you to Chuck Diehl for donating his tractor and time to work the arena for the barrel racing.

There were many donations made to the auction which began the evening's entertainment. Winterset auctioneer, John Garrison and Garrison Auction Company handled the auction which was coordinated by Matt Owens of U. S. Rodeo Supply of Winterset, Iowa.

On hand to add to the festivities were Mandy McDaniels, Earlham, IA who sang the National Anthem. Mark Keaton, Lincoln, NE, country music entertainer, performed as a part of the tribute. Four queens were also on hand greeting fans and signing autographs. They were: Miss Rodeo Iowa 2007, Amanda Eason, Clarinda, IA; Miss Teen Rodeo Iowa 2007, Suzette Walker, Woodbine, IA; Madison County Fair Queen 2006, Sara Parker; and Miss Extreme Bull Riding Tour, Abby McDonald, Aurora, NE.

In an interview with Teri Clemens, she stated that the family was overwhelmed with all the love and support they have received since Jason’s accident. “We could not be happier with the turn out and the results of the benefit. The results were much more than we could ever have hoped for. We can’t thank everyone enough.”
Todd Crase and Shad Smith, Extreme Bull Riding Tour, would also like to extend their gratitude to the members of the “Extreme Team” for going above and beyond anything that could ever have been expected of them for this event.

As the presenting sponsor of this event Rodeo Attitude would also like to thank everyone who helped make it a total success.
